Description
Two of the most amazing discoveries of the 21st century are gravitational waves and the Higgs boson. Each discovery took great perseverance over nearly half a century. Gravitational waves concern the very large and distant: black holes spiraling into each other millions of light years away. The Higgs boson is about the very small: exploring far inside the atomic nucleus. Even though they seem extremely different, at the most fundamental level, these cosmic and nano events are secretly connected by a relation between Einstein's theory of gravity and the theory of subnuclear forces--which Dixon will explain after telling the story of their discovery. — Join Prof. Lance Dixon as our speaker at 6:00 PM PT on Thursday, February 20, 2025 KITP Public Lectures connect you with people and research that is transforming our understanding of the universe. This popular series of 3-4 public lectures each year takes advantage of the presence of the many distinguished scientists who visit KITP to collaborate on the most fascinating and challenging questions in their fields.
